Through Spiritual Eyes

“For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities, all things have been created by Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” (1 Colossians 1:16&17)

Through mankind’s intelligence, and willful determination, the human race has accomplished some pretty amazing feats, unveiling the intricate beauty and order of this amazing world we live in. And through patient observation and persistent scientific investigation we have discovered answers to many of the “how?”, “when?”, and “where?” questions of life. And now, having ruled and reigned on this planet for some time, it seems only natural that we identify ourselves as the masters of our own destiny, triumphant pioneers, and even as glorified gods and goddesses.
However, in our more honest and sober moments, when things aren’t turning out exactly as we had planned, and the forces of nature remind us that we aren’t as strong and powerful and independent as we would like to believe we are, a nagging question remains unanswered… Why? And in asking such a question we are admitting that there must be something more to this life than the random exercise of atoms, or the fulfillment of our carnal pleasures. Surely this grand drama must have a director, or at least a producer, who put this whole jumbled reality together, and with plans of His own. It is when we begin to think like this that we begin entering into, or at least entertaining, the spiritual realm.
Of course, it is difficult for us to think in this way, because we are not primarily spiritual beings, but rather flesh and blood creatures, who are intricately tied to our physical surroundings. So much so, that many even despise those who would attempt to replace our happy surface experience with anything so demanding as a God; one who might demand of us things that don’t come naturally, or easy to us. And so, on the whole, we (the human race) keep singing our own song, seeing only what we want to see in the world around us, and content to keep the real Creator of all things at a distance.
This blog is about challenging this prevalent ego centric mode of operation. It is about not shying away from the profound “Why?” questions, but instead appealing to our Creator God, humbling ourselves before His mighty hand, and searching, honestly, for His purpose and will for this univese and particulary for ourselves.
There are many methods of investigation in the pursuit of spiritual realities; from simple child-like prayers to philosophical induction, to meditative practices. Each has its own benefits, opening our eyes to the world of unseen forces.
In this blog I will be using my observations of the physical world around us as a means of spiritual investigation. And through the aid of photography I will be highlighting the creative beauty of our God, and musing on the message behind the surface patterns and structures we often see yet take for granted everyday.
In the process I hope to inspire those who have yet to enjoy a personal relationship with the Creator of the universe, to search a little more intently than before, and to encourage my fellow Christians with insights and glimpses into God’s glory, that they may have further cause to celebrate with me in God’s magnificent and loving display in His Creation.
